Our methodology
How we rank cards, where the numbers come from, and how we make money. If you only read one page on this site, read this one.
How cards are ranked
Every card is scored on one number: what it returns in Canadian dollars for the spending you tell us about, minus what it costs you to hold. We convert points, miles, and cash back to dollars at published redemption values, subtract the annual fee, and rank on what is left. Nothing else moves a card up or down.
Where the numbers come from
Rates, fees, and card terms are taken from issuer sources and stored with the date they were verified. We never estimate a rate or fill in a gap from memory. When a figure cannot be verified, we show that instead of guessing. The verification date at the bottom of every page is read from the data itself, so it cannot claim to be fresher than the catalogue actually is.
How we make money
When you apply through Skarp and the issuer approves you, that issuer pays us a referral fee. That is our only revenue. It does not change the ranking, because the ranking is computed from your spending before we know anything about which card you pick. Cards from issuers who pay us nothing are ranked by exactly the same formula. We do not sell your personal information.
What we cannot tell you
We do not know whether you will be approved, what credit limit you will receive, or what rate you will be offered. Those decisions belong entirely to the issuer and depend on information we never see. Our comparison is a starting point, not financial advice, and you should confirm every detail with the issuer before you apply.
